Here on the Big Island there is a new phone scam that we should all be on the lookout for. It is important to remember that if you get a call requesting money for any reason, it is always safest to call the company directly yourself to verify. Be sure to use the phone number you find in the phone book or from a valid source like the company’s official website and not any number you receive over the phone or by email.

The latest scam involves a person posing as a representative from Hawai‘i Electric Light Company. On the call they will tell you that your bill is overdue and your electricity will be shut off unless you pay right away.

Remember, when in doubt, call the utility company first to confirm.
