Fraudsters are continually trying to find new and more realistic ways to scam consumers. One way to keep from falling victim to scams is to stay up to date on what new scams are out there. Many times your local news station will write articles when a new one is reported so simply keeping up your local news can help!

Take for example, the “Can You Hear Me?” scam reported in an article by Big Island Now warning of a scam where the person on the other end is recording your voice to use later and make it sound like you’ve authorized a major purchase. Or also, the latest Gmail phishing scam with a frighteningly real looking email tricking users into sharing their Gmail login credentials.

When it comes to phone scams, it is usually best to not answer calls from unfamiliar numbers. If it’s important they will leave a message for you to call back. If someone does call and ask “Can you hear me?” do not answer, just hang up. Watch out for other questions designed to solicit a “yes” answer.

In response to email scams, scammers are becoming more sophisticated so be sure to look for a valid URL. Also remember if an email looks suspicious be cautious and contact the company directly through another channel such as phone, or through their website. Not through the email you think may be fraudulent.
